About The Loughborough Orchestra

History

The Loughborough Orchestra was formed in the early 1990's after Martin Cooper saw the need for a locally based orchestra for amateur musicians. At that time it was conducted by Mark Pullinger, and concerts were first held in the church at Thorpe Acre. The orchestra grew quickly both in size and reputation and enjoyed good support at concerts, some of the most notable ones being those with local soloist Iona Brown and the open-air concerts at Barrow.

Rehearsals

During academic terms, we meet at 7.30 pm each Monday evening, at Burleigh College in Loughborough. Typically, we will play for two 45 min. sessions with a half hour coffee/social break in between (which for many members frequently continues at the pub later). The orchestra is balanced but new members, and particularly string players, are always very welcome.
